RLS Signs Open Letter Regarding Greece’s Plans to Phase Out Cash Assistance and Housing for Refugees

The Greek government has announced plans to evict those with refugee status and subsidiary protection from camps and UNHCR housing. Access to cash assistance will also be gradually restricted. Starting with those who were granted status by the 31st of July 2017 the Greek state intends to systematically remove refugees from their homes with evictions planning to begin on the 31st of March 2019.

This announcement is especially concerning when it is understood that there is no framework for the integration of recognised refugees in Greece and no social housing scheme to provide people with affordable housing. Therefore, the only option for those that will be evicted is to privately rent an apartment. The reality of this option is frustrated by the revocation of cash assistance and high unemployment rates in Greece making it hard to find a job, especially for those that do not speak the language.

Below is a letter written by FEANTSA and the Greek Network for the Right to Shelter and Housing, co-signed by RLS and other organisations in Greece. We are concerned that the planned exists may result in homelessness and hardship for those evicted.

The Greek Government must have a better and appropriate plan in place to avoid leaving refugees without housing and to support integration into Greek society.
